Mean Servers advises clients that require older PHP versions to upgrade their programs as soon as possible. This added fee does not cover the security of individually installed programs but rather defers the cost of ensuring the older version of PHP installed on our shared servers does not cause a security vulnerability to other clients located on the same machine.
Only clients that have specifically reached out to Mean Servers for a specific version of PHP that is no longer in normal support can expect to see this new item charged on their monthly invoices. To avoid this charge, clients should make their PHP programs compatible with the most recent PHP version released (7.0) or change their plan to a VPS plan where they can run any version of PHP they wish without additional charge.
This charge only affects shared hosting clients using an EOL PHP line. This charge does NOT affect those using a EOL PHP line that have a VPS, dedicated server, or colocation with Mean Servers. If you are unsure if this charge affects you, please get in touch with the billing department and we would be more than happy to let you know if you are affected by the new charge or not.
