About Us

Mean Servers was founded May of 2014 in Denver, Colorado, where our primary data center and headquarters is located. In September 2015, we expanded to Los Angeles, California adding an additional data center location. We are a young company, but definitely not an inexperienced company! Most of our "Mean Team" (as we like to refer to ourselves) have spent decades in the hosting industry, in data centers of all different sizes, we have seen the Internet come to fruition and even helped morph it into what it is today. We live and breathe technology.

Mean Servers strives to be an industry leader in offering cutting edge technology solutions to everyday problems. We believe our clients shouldn't have to worry about if they are hosted on sub-par components or critical redundancies aren't in place; after all, running a business of any size is hard enough as it is let alone doing business with a web hosting company.

Mean Servers simplifies the problem with other hosts out there, we focus on what we are good at, keeping your websites and servers online, working 24/7 so you can focus on what you're good at! We are constantly evolving, as any good company out there should. Our servers comprise of the latest generation of technology at both the hardware and software level and of course, we love playing with something new!

But it's not just the technology that sets Mean Servers apart from other web hosts, it's the people. Our people are mean, but not in the traditional sense. We mean Mean as in passionate, awesome, and just plain kickass. Whether you are contacting our sales team or support team, day or night, our Mean Team is there to help, assist, and serve in anyway we can. Mean Servers goes the extra mile to make sure our clients and their hosting needs are completely covered.

Denver Data Center

Mean Servers Denver is housed in the state-of-the-art data center run by Viawest located in downtown Denver, Colorado, not the tech center. Our support staff is only a quick 15 minute walk or 5 minute drive from the physical data center ensuring that if something goes wrong, we can fix it immediately. This is in addition to the Viawest staff that is located right on site 24/7.

Power

The power to the data center is supplied from multiple substations which is connected to our UPS battery system that conditions the power to the data center. In the highly unlikely event of utility failure, we have a backup diesel generator that immediately starts to supply power for our data center ensuring that at no time do our servers ever lose power. Our secondary redundant power utility supply has the same setup, a UPS battery backup system and diesel generator.

Internet Connectivity

Being located in downtown Denver has its advantages, the main one being our location is a major point-of-presence (POP) having multiple fiber entry points to the building from different providers. This means that if for some reason one of our fiber lines get cut, we won't lose connectivity as our network will automatically route around the severed line.

We connect via BGP directly to Viawest where we receive bandwidth from five different Tier I and Tier II networks: Level 3, Comcast, Hurricane Electric, tw Telecom, and Cogent. In addition to other providers within the building, dark fiber is also available to us should we need to connect to another carrier hotel for future expansion. We are able to scale our facilities up to 1 Tbps before needing to upgrade our existing infrastructure. Mean Servers also connects via BGP to several other "hidden" peers that we provide telemetry reports for and coordinate together to fight DDoS attacks.

Security

Our Viawest facility features on site 24/7 security personnel in the lobby of the building to ensure only those who are authorized to be there have access to the building. A credential system only allows visitors to access floors to which they have business to conduct. We deploy CCTV cameras and intrusion detection systems in each of our racks to immediately detect and alert staff to a possible security breach.

Environmental

Our cooling and humidity is controlled by multiple units throughout our data center that feature N+1 redundancy. Our environmental systems keep our data center at a cool 20°C and a 45% humidity to ensure longevity and reliability in all our systems. Automated monitoring systems are located throughout our data center to ensure a consistent temperature and humidity are kept throughout the entire data center. Multiple environmental monitors are placed throughout each rack Mean Servers rents to monitor airflow, humidity, temperature and early detection for smoke.

Fire Detection and Suppression

An early fire detection system is monitored by both our onsite staff and our buildings 24/7 security. Should an alarm be tripped, we can send a staff member to check the problem out before it becomes a fire. Should a fire still manage to start, our pre-action dry pipe fire suppression system would activate only in the area where the heat caused the sprinkler bulb to burst. This activation would immediately signal the areas power monitor to disconnect power to the equipment to prevent further damage to equipment from the water. Custom environmental detection systems are places throughout our rack to detect smoke and heat. Should one of the sensors be tripped, power to the server experiencing the fault will be severed preventing a cascading failure of systems.

Los Angeles Data Center

Mean Servers Los Angeles is located at 611 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, California; a purpose built building for telecommunications providers. With multiple fiber entry points and 24/7 onsite security, our Los Angeles data center is the perfect location for mission critical applications serving the West Coast and Asia-Pacific realm. We are able to monitor all Los Angeles systems remotely from Denver and staff onsite is able to take care of any immediate problems in addition to our part time Los Angeles staff. Spare parts are kept onsite just as our Denver facility in case of hardware failures.

Power

Redundant power is fed via two separate and diverse utility power paths ensuring the data center can withstand a power failure from one of our utility feeds. Should power be lost from both utility paths, the building's local power plant consisting of n+1 bank of UPS batteries will kick in supplying power while the n+1 generators spin up to full speed. With multiple diesel delivery contracts, we can continue running on the backup generators for an extended period of time in a worse case scenario.

Internet Connectivity

Los Angeles is an essential gateway to the West Coast of the United States and a critical link to all major Asia-Pacific internet hubs as well. Being located at Wilshire Boulevard gives us access to a wide array of carriers and peers to ensure the lowest latency and fastest, least congested route possible to all these locations. This ensures that no matter where your customers are located, when having services with Mean Servers Los Angeles, a consistent and fast connection is always provided.

We connect via BGP directly to Psychz Network where we receive bandwidth from NINE different Tier I and Tier II networks: Comcast, nLayer, TiNet, China Unicom, Zayo, Hurricane Electric, PCCW, China Telecom, and China Telecom CN2. In addition to other providers within the building, dark fiber is also available running to One Wilshire to us should we need to connect to another carrier for future expansion. We are able to scale our facilities up to 20 Tbps before needing to upgrade our existing infrastructure. Mean Servers also connects via BGP to several other "hidden" peers that we provide telemetry reports for and coordinate together to fight DDoS attacks.

Security

611 Wilshire Boulevard has 24/7 onsite security personnel and all activity is monitored with multiple CCTV feeds throughout the premises. Mean Servers also deploys our own CCTV systems in our private racks to ensure unauthorized access is prohibited. A keycard system and multiple mantraps also track and ensure only authorized users have access to the facility. All events and recorded video are kept offsite for at least a year.
